About the march
Due to the complex logistics, there will be a relatively small core group of walkers (get to know us), but we hope many locals will join us for one or several stages. If you are keen to get involved, please just get in touch.
We leave Bilbao harbour on 28 September, with a sending off from climate groups, friends and the media. After a day on the ferry and a day of preparation, on 1 October we set out from Portsmouth.
For economic reasons, we are unable to walk for longer than a month, therefore our route has been squeezed into just 28 stages – an average of 30 km a day and no rest days.
The route has been carefully designed to maximize visibility and we will pass through cities such as Oxford, Sheffield, Leeds, Newcastle, Edinburgh, etc. Unfortunately, most of our march will take place alongside roads, as footpaths are seldom the shortest route.
We have got in touch with many local groups of Extinction Rebellion, as well as Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace. After telling them about our march and exchanging hundreds of emails, they have gone above and beyond to provide us with accommodation and meals. We should now have a warm meal and bed/floor to sleep on in most towns, thanks to their incredible solidarity. We hope our presence can help inspire local activists.
We have been invited to dozens of rallies and speeches. On the way, for example, we will be met by samba bands, talk with the Lord Mayor of Leeds and march through the centre of Glasgow with other marches from different countries.
For the last two stages, from Edinburgh, many other people will join us to arrive en masse in Glasgow on Saturday 30 October, just before the start of the COP26 (1–12 November). Here, we will take part in rallies and activities organized by activists, before heading home. On the outskirts of Glasgow, we will join up with ‘Camino to COP26’, a kindred project organized by Extinction Rebellion UK.
